About three years ago, QMA became involved with National Health Decisions Day which is celebrated each April. Each successive year our efforts have gotten a bit more expansive. This year, as we presented information about health care proxies, living wills and Medical Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (MOLST) we kept track of the different kinds of interactions we had with patients and visitors. On April 18th there were 13 people who told us they were not interested in receiving an explanation of these tools. 127 people listened to the presentations and took materials home to review and share with their loved ones. 12 people asked for in- depth discussions and completed their forms while on site. 41 people proudly responded that they had previously completed their Advance Directives and were happy they did so. These are great numbers for a one-day NHDD awareness campaign. We’d like to expand to multiple days next year. Our Social Work, Nursing, and Administrative staff did a wonderful job as volunteers spreading the word about this important topic and we’re glad we got to engage with so many families and individuals. But it is only the beginning. We have already begun planning for 2018 and have exciting developments in the works to assist us in carrying out this important mission all year. Stay tuned for more news coming soon!
